yes and its driving me insane
Haley turned back to Nathan waiting for any sign of an objection when there was none she continued dancing. She knew all eyes were on her and not just Lucas and Nathan's. "I never figured Haley for the freaky type" Brooke comented as she Peyton and Jake ruefully observed from the booth. "I guess she had a little too much Red Bull" Peyton replied picking up and shaking Haley's empty can. Brooke scooted a couple inches closer to her before leaning into her ear. "yeah right don't act like you never thought about it" she said conspiritorily. A knowing smirk crossed Peyton's face "Yeah we talked about it briefly but I never thought she'd actually try to pull it off." Haley leaned back into Lucas wrapping her arms around his neck as she started getting into the music. He supported her weight as she rotated her hips in a circular motion much like a belly dancer carefully avoiding contact with him.
Haley did this purposefully not wanting to agitate this already delicate situation.
Eventually Nathan's expression changed from indifference to something else that alarmed Hailey.
She soon leaned forward grasping Nathan's face between her hands she brought him in for a kiss. This promptly ended their harmonious dance leaving Lucas calmly walking away trying to hide the sting. When the kiss ended Haley layed her head on Nathan's chest and he held her close as they swayed to the music. Haley didn't need to turn around to know that Lucas was gone she felt it and it left her numb.
She stayed in Nathan's embrace for a couple more songs before she decided to let go. It was because she felt safe there all the feelings she felt for Lucas were contained when Nathan held her. This is what Haley thought before she caught a glimpse of Lucas disappearing up a staircase. She moved away from Nathan explaining that she'd be back soon and headed off to find Lucas .

"Look who's talking " Haley said her voice rising a pitch " What do you call that little show you put on ealier with Brooke "She said accusingly "And don't you dare act like it wasn't done out of spite". He asked softly. "Truthfully?" Haley asked staring him in the eye "I feel like I want you more than anyone and that scares me .
Lucas stared at Haley his eyes not hiding the fact that he was still processing this information when Jake came in. "Haley Nathan's looking for you and we're leaving soon so..." Without another word Nathan put his head in his hands and began sobbing quietly his body convulsed slightly. It was one of the most painful things that Haley had ever witnessed and it hurt her to know that she could do nothing stop it.
Haley scooted closer to him now kneeling between his knees she gently removed his hands from his face and wound her arms around him. By Monday afternoon Haley had already begun moving her things out.

There was a lot of chatter going on around her as the guest patiently waited for the ceremony to start. Haley looked around seeing if she reconized anyone besides Keith and Karen when she spotted Nathan. Her chest began to tighten and memories came flooding back the feeling grew worse as his eyes layed on her.
When the wedding song started all eyes were down the aisleincluding theirs as the flower girls began their march. It had spaghetti straps that criss crossed in the middle of her shoulder blades and featured a daring low back thanx to Brooke but the front was tradtional. Peyton's blonde tresses were pulled back and held in place by her veil. The rest of her hair hung in a mass of curls that fell down her back with lily's intricately woven within it.
When Jake laid eyes on her he stopped breathing Larry was also so overcome with emotion that tears spilled from his eyes when he gave Jake his daughters hand.
Lucas eyes were glued to Haley as the couple exchanged their vows prompting her to blush when Karen took notice. A smile crept across his mother's face and Lucas averted his eyes to Brooke who also gave him a knowing smirk.

The guest then retreated to a tent set up at the side of the house for a suprise as the newly weds took to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife.
A lanky barefoot blonde in a canary yellow slip dress walked across the stage set up in the front of the room. It took the first couple lines leaving her mouth for people to realize it was singer Joss stone. It was a surprise from Jake because he knew Peyton always loved her song "spoiled". Later in the evening after recieving toasts from their made of Honor Brooke and Best man Lucas Joss took the stage again. Haley sat at her table her eyes searching the room for Lucas. She found him on the side of the dance floor talking with Keith who conviently went to find Karen as he saw Nathan aprroaching.
This was not lost on Lucas who turned cautiously to greet his brother "Hey man long time no see" Lucas smiled nervously. The next morning Haley woke up and went through the motionns of getting ready. The six of them had collectively planned to go to breakfast in advance but since most of th occupants of suite 323 decided to rise well after noon there was a slight change in plan. As Haley was slipping into her faded blue jeans she was momentarily startled by Nathan entering the bathroom where she was getting ready.
Leaning against the door frame he looked down on her with a look of satifaction in his eyes. Haley stared up at him from where she leaned over "can I help you "she grumbled as she continued to pull on her jeans.
"Whoa there hold you're fire isn't this one of the perks of marriage?" Nathan said with his arms folded smugly eyes still fastened to her. With Last nights events hanging heavy on her mind Haley was in no mood for such flirtations she was completely somewhere else. She evenly reminded herself that she had no right to be harsh with him so she played along zipping up her jeans slowly Haley delibrately gave him ample time to gaze upon her.
She then grabbed her white short sleeve flowing peasant top with the intricate lace pattern under the chest area. She slowly slid it over her head watching Nathan stare at her cleavage before it became hidden from his view. A sexy smile fell on his lips as he watched her graciously. Haley slipped into her white wedge sandals and gathered her hair starting a french braid across the front. She sauntered by Nathan with a false bravado hiding the fact that she felt like an imposter. "How could you do that to him? " She thought as she was safely behind the door "you know you don't deserve him".
Almost an hour later they were all being seated to lunch at the uber ritzy riverside cafe. After receiving their menues they informed their waiter there would be two late arrivals. Haley looked over at Brooke who looked beautiful in a form skiming pink cherry covered dress with red cowboy boots. The look was classic and trendy but what stood out most to Haley was Brooke's face it was scrubbed clean but still had a luminous glow that she envied.
Haley could not understand how Lucas just let her go she was gorgeous. She knew Brooke had her faults but she changed for Lucas and this scared Haley. She was pulled out of her thoughts by Nathan placing an arm around the back of her chair. It made her uncomfortable and she realized it was because it did not seem natural. She wore a belt with silver studs wrapped around her waist that grew attention to her slim belly. Her hair hung loose and was slightly crimped she polished the look with heavy black liner and nude shimmer lip gloss.
Peyton and Brooke were also head turners Peyton in her white corset that laced up in front with a yellow leather ultra miniskirt that accented her long lean legs. Brooke was a jaw dropper in a burgundy minidress with pleated botton and a plunging neckline reminecent of JLo's famous green dress. The group moved together within the club while they scouted for a booth.
Once they found a table one they quickly went their separate ways. Brooke dragged Lucas to the dance floor while Nathan,Peyton and Jake went for drinks . Haley stayed behind to mind the booth and watch as Lucas and Brooke merge into one on the dance floor. Soon Nathan,Peyton and Jake returned to the booth engaged in a previous conversation. The song ended as Brooke and Lucas made their way back to the booth both a little sweaty and out of breath. Haley sat on the edge of the bed as she placed a pair black ribbon lace up stillettos on her freshly pedicured size six feet. Her hair was wound into sleek bun with the exception of a bang which was swept to the side. Her black satin dress laid precariously on the bed as she sat down in front of the vanity table. Haley checked her make up and took in all the scents that lay before her they ranged from Burberry London,Gucci, Givenchy and beyond.
She decided on the sweet scent of Rapture a impulsive purchase that she made a few days ago. Haley placed a thin platinum necklace to her neck adorned with a solitare diamond that she had gotten as an aniversary gift from Nathan. All the while the tranquil sounds of Wax Poetic feat. Norah Jones filled not only Haley's room but the entire suite. Although the song sounded like an early 90's techno sex ballad it had a calming effect on Haley that she loved.
After a few minutes of struggling with the clasp of the necklace she finally got it on. Haley then walked over to the full length mirror next to the bathroom door and examined the image looking back at her. She wore a black lace corset that almost perfectly matched her shoes haley smiled thinking about buying one similar to this at her bachlorette party.The door of the room was slightly ajar so Lucas decided to knock quickly and go in. He had come to see if she could help him with his tie but all his thoughts peeled away once he caught a glimpse of her.
Haley froze as soon as she heard the light rapping at the door and looked up into the mirror. She was breathless watching him watch her anxiety filled her every
nerve ending. It got even worse as he stepped in and closed the door....
The song had just ended so the sound of the door closing sliced through the air like a knife. She didn't dare turn around because her brain screamed at her that this shouldn't be happening. Haley felt helpless standing there held in place by his intense gaze. Haley smiled half heartedly at his comment still very aware of what she was wearing or not wearing. He placed the tie around her neck and Haley's pulse sped up she could hear her heart pounding in her ears. This felt wrong on so many levels but she couldn't tear herself away.It was like someone had taken posession of her body and she hadn't even put up a fight.

At first it seemed unintentional but it clearly became intentional as lucas slowly ran his hands down her arms staring her in the eyes as he did so. Haley involuntarily shivered and grabbed the back of his white dress shirt pulling him closer. Lucas moaned surprising them both he then raised Haley's arms high above her head. He had her wrists inprisioned in one hand as he neared her face.

By now the cd had changed from Wax poetic's "Angel's "to Garabge's "You looks so fine". It wasn't like anyone would've have noticed seeing as Haley was soon struggling against Lucas for control. She had no idea how far this was going but it was going somewhere fast. Lucas finally relented and moved away from her he rested his forehead against hers as they panted for air. He moved forward and as he did his nose grazed hers right then there was a knock at the door it was Nathan.

It wasn't until she felt the fabric of the tie sliding off of her neck that she was jolted back. She grabbed the other side of the tie that Lucas was trying to pull off effectively stopping it so that it stayed in place. Once he let it go she knotted the tie loosely around her neck and then placed it over his.
Haley brushed his shoulders off briskly and watched as he tightened it and with remorse clearly in his eyes he walked to the bathroom. Haley took that as an opportunity to slip into her dress and finish getting ready. Lucas went into the bathroom to splash cold water on his face he had to be dreaming he thought as he stared at hisself through the mirror above the sink and when he emerged she was gone.
A couple hours later Haley found her self wrapped in the arms of Jake Jaglieski.
He fidgeted and wiped the sweat that formed on his palms profusely as they swayed to the music. Jake eyed her wearily making her laugh "Is it that obvious?"
He said referring to the fact that he was nervous about proposing to Peyton tonight.
" Jake even Stevie Wonder can see it" Haley quipped making him laugh nervously.
"So I guess Nate told you the plan" he said as he twirled her away from his self and brought her back in. "Yes he did and trust me Jake you have nothing to worry about" Haley said as she peered over his shoulder at Peyton who was watching them intently with a wistful smile on her face. She sat next to Lucas her hair slicked back into a ponytail with a sophisticated part on the right side, her head resting on Lucas's shoulder. Looking down where her head layed Lucas planted a chaste kiss on top of Peyton's blonde tresses making her smile widen.
Although Haley knew it was nothing she still felt a pang of jealousy after watching the innocent act. Moments later Peyton was leading Lucas on the dance floor and promptly exchanging him for jake. Lucas held Haley close as he began whispering to her his breath tickling the tiny hairs on the back of Haley's ear.
"I just wanted you to know how sorry I am about earlier"" I mean I saw you standing there like that and you looked soo....." and I just" he stammered. "I don't know what came over me Hales and I'm so sorry "He said looking into her eyes for emphasis. Haley started to speak only to be cut off by Nathan cutting in leaving Brooke in charge of lucas. He stared after her a look of helplessness crossing his face.
The ballroom closed it's doors around 2 am leaving Nathan, Haley, Lucas and Brooke stumbling up to their room Jake booked his and Peyton's separate for obvious reasons. Lucas opened the door to the spacious deluxe suite of the Murray hotel they had pooled their money to book it for the ocassion. It was a two story suite boasting two master bedrooms, a full kitchen, dining area, and living room with a Jacuzzi occupying the second floor. Sand colored marble with gold trim decorated the interior of the suite the hall lit up as the door opened triggering the motion sensor.
"That is too cool I still can't get over it" Brooke said awe struck as they entered the hallway. Everyone went to their respective rooms to change into comfortable clothing with the exeption of Brooke. She stayed in the red body skimming D&G dress that she had tailored to fit her like a second skin with shoes in hand she set out to raid the mini bar.
Nathan closed the door after he and Haley entered their room. He grabbed his wife from behind wrapping his arms round her waist and pulling her against him. Haley yelped in surprise as Nathan turned her around for a kiss. She could taste the liquor he'd been drinking on his lips and it was intoxicationg. Soon Haley's black satin dress sat on pooled around her feet as Nathan backed her up to the bed.
Nathan gently sat her down and carefully undid the laces on the back of her corset with a finese that would cause envy in men twice his age. Both of them were still a little heady from drinking which caused Haley to burst into fits of giggling every so often. Eventually Haley layed bare before Nathan as he stared at her as if he were just seeing her for the first time. Looking down at Haley he began to take off his shirt revealing the sculpted physique that playing basketball had awarded him.
Nathan placed his kness on each side of Haley straddling her . He was careful not to put most of his weight down but the little pressure that he did sent Haley scambling to the bathroom leaving him in hysterics. Haley was warm and flushed from the liquor and activity so she washed her face to cool off. As she finished rinsing she saw a sobering image. It was a faint red blotch that had begun to appear on the nape of her neck she touched it knowingly.
When Haley went back into the room she found Nathan on the brink of dozing as he layed amongst the giantic downe pillows. His eyes snapped open as Haley reentered the room. "You almost missed out a couple minutes longer and I would've been down for the count" Nathan said sleepily. "But now that you're back where were we?"he said as he rose to his knees." Hold that thought" Haley said as she walked over to where he kneeled pushing him back into the bed.
"I'm thirsty I'm going to the kitchen to grab some juice or something" she grabbed Nathan's tuxedo shirt to cover her naked form. Haley slipped out of the room she'd barely closed the door before she heard his soft snoring. She tiptoed pass a sleeping Brooke on the living room couch and made her way to the Kitchen where she heard Lucas talking. Haley found him leaning against the doorway on his cell.
She tried to pass only to be blocked by him placing an arm on either side of her.
Haley tried to duck under only to be blocked again "We need to talk" he said as he covered the mouth piece of the phone. " We can't do that now can we?" " until then I need to get by" Haley said snarkishly. "Yeah mom that was her" Lucas smirked as he passed her the phone. Haley blushed furiously not realizing she'd been that
loud.
Lucas watched her intently as she fielded questions from Karen about her night.
Haley became very self conscious under his instense gaze. She saw something in his eyes that made her feel like he knew there was nothing under the shirt. A couple minutes later she handed lucas back the phone. She tried not to stare at him in his loose fitting gray sweatpants and white tank as she poured herself a glass of ice tea.
After he was through he closed the phone and focused his attention on her. Haley turned away from him facing the counter as he walked toward her. "I've been thinking and you know what I'm thinking because you know me. " You wanted it I saw it in your eyes Hales you wanted me too".
Haley put her glass down and turned to face him as he continued. "At first I hated the the thought of you with Nathan because he was jerk." Even now that I know him I still don't think he's right for you". Tears of frustration welled in Lucas's eyes as he spoke. "He's my brother the only one I got and I love him but... "he trailed off trying to restrain himself. "He doesn't know you like I do Hales" Lucas said through gritted teeth.

Haley moved to the other side of the bed carefully so she wouldn't wake him and she layed there a while before glancing over at the clock. It was 5:30 am and Haley knew the sun would be up soon and if that happened she'd never get some sleep so she finally closed her eyes.
Almost as soon as her lids closed Haley was bombarded with images of what took place between Lucas and herself in the kitchen just moments earlier. Suddenly it was like she was there again everything was still so vivid that she could taste his lips as he kissed her. She could feel the soft pressure of his hands on her hips when he gripped them and lifted her on to the counter. Haley's spine tingled remembering the way his eyes burned when she wrapped her legs around his bringing them closer than she'd never dared to imagine.
All this weighed on Haley's brain making her become restless and stirring Nathan from his own slumber. "Haley" Nathan urged gently as he wiped the wet strands of hair from his wife's face. Haley still tossed and turned " No luke we can't do this this is wrong" Haley murmured in her sleep. Nathan took Haley by the shoulders and lightly shook them. Her eyes popped open and she rapidly sat straight up "It's ok Hales it was just a dream" Nathan said as Haley looked around the room a little disoriented wishing to god that it was true.
Haley then fell back into the pillows and Nathan soon followed suit "are you ok " he asked as he rested his head on his hand his elbows supporting it's weight. "yeah hun I'm good" Haley said quickly. Nathan layed his head back down and began staring up at the ceiling something clearly on his mind. Haley turned on her side facing him"Penny for your thoughts" she said simply. Nathan exhaled a breath "you said something about Lucas and I was just wondering what it was about." He asked with questions in his eyes "Oh did I "Haley said as she turned away from him not wanting him to see the color that she felt draining from her face.
"You know what? I really can't remember " She lied hoping that she'd convinced him. A look of concern rapidly crossed Nathan's face but just as quick as it appeared it was gone. Haley knew he didn't believe her but trusted her so she brushed it off. "Look let's get some sleep we partied pretty hard." She explained as she pulled the cover over both of them and let him scoop her up again. " You know I love you right Hales"? he said as he started to doze. Lucas found his self outside leaning against the door of his brand new fire engine red Scion tc a bithday gift from Andy and his mom. He was the picture of cool in faded jeans , a gray thermal shirt and a black leather bomber jacket as he patiently waited for Liesel. She was a girl he'd met at his mother's cafe they'd been dating a couple of weeks now. She was running late which was a little bit unsual so he was begining to worry.
Just as he opened his cell to call Haley rounded the corner. She was a vision in a frayed denim mini ,knee length black leather boots and a black form fitting T shirt with the beatles written in white. She had aviator sunglasses perched a top her blonde streaked auburn hair, Lucas watched her amused by her obvious self conciousness.
Haley approached him with a scowl firmly etched on her delicate features.
She had been obviously annoyed by the smirk on his face and since he was'nt trying to hide it neither was she. "Well look at you" Lucas said as she drew near but she blatantly ignored the remark as she continued to explain her presence. She explained that she had a gig at this club downtown and that she needed a ride.
Peyton was out with Jake and Nathan had just left for High Flyers so Lucas came to the conclusion that he was plan C. Haley pointed out that she had just left the cafe and she didn't have enough time to go home so Brooke loaned her the oufit. She was talking so fast that she was out of breath so Lucas cut her off by asking for the directions. As Haley sat down He noted how her already short skirt rose considerably higher, that was a Brooke ensamble alright he thought.
Lucas mentally chastised his self for looking and started the car as Haley began telling him about her day. Eventually the topic switched from herself to him as she eyed his outfit and commented on it that was when he remembered Liesel "shit"he cursed softly. He quickly called and left her a message telling her to call as soon as she could. "So this girl Liesel are you guys serious?" Haley asked as she absently ran her fingers through her hair.
Lucas looked over at her out of the corner of his eye as she stared out the window . He contemplated telling her how beautiful she looked tonight but as he opened his mouth she turned to face him looking for an answer. " We just met Hales I like spending time with her but we're just getting to know each other." Haley raised an eyebrow skeptically" Well with the amount of time that you two spend together" she trailed off.
Lucas looked at her puzzled" Geez jealous much Hales" he asked teasingly. Haley rolled her hazel eyes " It's just that since I've come back I haven't seen you as much as I thought I would". Lucas nodded and she continued "I thought that with Nate away" "It would be how it used to" he finished the sentence for her. Haley nodded as she leaned forward to switch the station from a hip hop song that she had a hard time understanding because of whispering to a soft rock station.

It was a hot and humid summer night on Martha's Vineyard when Haley woke up in a cold sweat. She carefully placed her toes on the floor and checked to see if she'd woken her husband. The floor squeaked under the pressure of her weight so Haley tiptoed to the bedroom door as fast as she could quickly closing it behind her. She walked down to the end of the hall to the linnen closet to find a washcloth.
Haley then made her way to the kitchen passing her son's room when her motherly intincts or paranoia as her husband referrs to it starting kicking in prompting her to check on him. She opened the door to Bailey's room finding the three year old deep in slumber his angelic face illuminated by the night light his father bought him. Haley flipped the switch cutting off the light before closing the door and smiling to herself. She was proud of him because he'd finally started sleeping by hisself. Though this is what she wanted she confided in her husband that she missed him sleeping between them.
Haley continued on to the Kitchen where she went to the sink and wet the washcloth running over her clammy skin. Leaning over Haley felt herself becoming dizzy and gripped the edges of the counter for support.
This was when she heard her husband approaching "Hay what's wrong?" he asked his voice full of concern as he walked forward taking her by the arm. " The heat is just a little much for me but it's cool". After the words left her lips they stopped and laughed about it "your obviously anything but cool right now" her husband smirked before adding "let me get you something to drink".
Haley admired the view on his long lean and tan body as he walked over to the fridge. "pick your poison" he asked her over his shoulder. "We have apple, grapefruit, O.j. and Ice tea" he offered" "Uh O.J. sounds good" she replied
Haley sat back in her chair and watched her husband of six years lost in memories. He turned around glasses in hand placing a glass in front of her before sitting down. He wore an expression on his face that reminded her of Lucas when he half smiled amused at something. She rarely thought of him since she got married except times like these. "Penny for your thoughts" her husband asked taking a sip of his orange juice. " He's getting big so fast I wish he would slow down a bit". "come here" Her husband said as he got up from his chair and lead his wife to the living room of their summer home.
A click of the remote and the sound of soft music began wafting through the room.
Haley smiled brightly but pulled away as he tried to dance with her "My feet feel like lead". she whined "Well I can remedy that" he explained raising his brows in a comical manner that suggested he had something up his sleeve. Haley resisted once more before giving in land letting him hoist her up wrapping her legs around him.
He swayed to the beat moving them around the room effortlessly as if Haley weighed nothing. Suddenly Haley felt a soft movent within her abdomen her husband must have felt it also since he stopped moving. Relization flooded his features and Haley's "She kicked Luke Haley shouted excitedly!" Lucas Looked at his wife in awe before quickly lying her down on the couch. He rested his head against her stomach feeling his daughter twisting and turning inside her.
Haley soon heard the sound her Bailey's feet rushing toward them "Don't cry Mommy" he said running and hopping up on Lucas's back. "No baby mommy wasn't crying" Haley explained I'm very happy". Haley watched overwhelmed as Bailey rested his head on her tummy carefully. Sitting on the edge of the bathtub she began stripping away the wet t'shirt and bra clung to her like a second skin when she was caught off guard by Lucas stepping back in. Holding a towel and a night gown that was thrown over his desk chair that she intended in wearing the night before "here's your...." he trailed off upon seeing Haley's naked back "I'm sorry" he said looking away quickly and setting the items on the sink counter. After the door was closed safely behind him he continued "I assumed you were going to wait to get undressed" he said through the door. Kissing Lucas on the cheek and huddling under the umbrella her boyfriend offered the two scampered off to their car. Lucas walked back to his room with a smile knowing Haley would be waiting. The next afternoon as Lucas stood by his locker exchanging books for his last class he was acosted by Nathan. He shoved Lucas into the locker his face slamming against the cold unyielding metal. After turning around Nathan grabbed him by the front of his shirt pinning him to the locker staring Lucas square in the eye as he raised his fist. Lucas said nothing staring back into the hurt and resentment that filled Nathan and burned brightly behind his blue eyes. Looking until he could stand it no longer Lucas closed his eyes in preparation for the first blow but it never came. Instead Lucas heard a bang against the metal door next to his head, Nathan grinded his teeth in anger and frustrationall the while still holding fast to Lucas's shirt. Opening his eyes Lucas turned his head and watched as blood dripped from Nathan's clenched fist as he continued ramming it into the locker. All the activity in the hallway had ceased for a while now and a crowd had begun to gather. Alerting Coach Durham who made his way through grabbing hold of Nathan's arm just as he drew back to strike again. "Come on son lets cool you down and get that looked at" He said in an uncharacteristically somber tone. "she my wife man she's my wife" Nathan repeated softly collapsing against the old man who began ushering him to the nurse's office. Lucas slid down the locker swallowing hard once he was released from Nathan's choke hold. Staring after him apologetically and locking eyes with the wounded boy before he disappeared down the corridor. Hearing the commotion Haley ran out of the tutoring center just in time to see Nathan &Whitey walking away. Rushing over to Lucasshe inpected his face for bruises "are you ok?" she asked frantically "I'm fine" Lucas said evenly. looking at the bloody dent and back at Lucas "is he alright?" she asked just as anxious. "Haley we've been sleeping in the same bed for two weeks now and I've never felt as far away from you as this. Don't push me away Hales I know you, you don't have to test me to make sure I'll be there." Lucas said closing the distance between them and removing the broom from her hand. She stared at him in disbelief her eyes glazed over as if he'd litterally read her mind. She was so out of it that she didn't realize that he was so close to her until he brushed the back of his hand against her face. "I'll be here Hales I always have been and I always will be" Lucas said as he earnestly stared into her wide eyes " I love you Haley whether this works or it fails it's you and me." It was a bright and breezy afternoon in Tree Hill North Carolina where Lucas Scott co captain of the Tree Hill Ravens varsity bastball team practiced his jump shots in River Court park. Haley James Scott the high school senior's sister in law and newly recrowned confidant sat on the sidelines at a picnic table half studying the book report that lie in front of her and half studying him. Wearing her blonde streaked auburn tresses in a high ponytail and an outfitt that consisted of khaki bermuda shorts with a fitted white halter shirt Haley looked like anything but the academic she truly was. The hazel eyed beauty fidgeted frustratedly moving her feet in and out of her white sandals as she tried to concentrate.
Haley desparately needed to overcome writer's block if she wanted to complete this paper ,watching Lucas wasn't helping her cause so she began giving the assignment her undivided attention. Soon Haley was so emersed in her literary masterpiece that she became unaware of anything else around her. This is when Lucas approached and rested his chin on her shoulder her startling her. Peering down at her paper "Hey this is pretty good"he said after reading a few lines.
"Thanx" Haley replied nervously as his proximity began to overwhelm her. "Uh Eww your like totally sweating on me" she said wiping her shoulder and trying to push him away. Lucas responded by wrapping his arms around her and rubbing his face against hers making her shriek in surprise. Effectively dodging her attempt to hit him Lucas began to run as Haley gave chase. The athletic blonde beat her at every turn there was no way for her to get near him. "This is fun keep this up a little longer it's helping my defense"Lucas teased. "I give up" Haley said raising her hands in surennder. "You're no fun it was way to easy" Lucas said with a fake scowl. "I'm sorry to disappoint you mr. competitive but I gotta go my shift at the cafe starts soon and if I'm late your mom will kill me" she reasoned. She walked back toward the bench with Lucas following closely behind.
Once they reached she retrieved her books she turned around,quickly tapped his face and ran. The thing was she wasn't as fast as him and Lucas caught up speedily grabbing her by the waist . Haley's books flew out of her hands and on to the court. Turning her round to face him he held her close against him binding her hands behind her with his own. She struggled against him trying to break free managaing only to amuse him in the process. "You caught me off guard I'll give you that but you're not quick enough" Lucas said arching a brow. Staring into the deep blue pools of eyes Haley could barely breathe let alone pay attention.
So when he swayed from one side to the other only then did she realize that he'd lifted her so high her feet were dangling.
"Luke I really have to go" she explained hoarsely after an awkward silence. "Oh yeah" He said loosening his grip and letting her slide down his body and safely to the ground. He knelt down to gather her books before placing them in her arms "Good game Hales we should play again" Lucas said with a smirk and breaking the weird aura that she felt between them. All she could do was nod in response as she slowly turned and headed toward the cafe not sure of anything that she felt or where it left her.
Later that night as Haley layed in bed as she went over the days events in her head. Brooke in typical form rambled on about how it was unhealthy for Haley to be in the house and in bed on a friday night and did this with relative ease as she got ready for her date with Lucas. "Hello Tutor Girl are you getting any of this?" Brooke asked realizing that Haley was ignoring her. Snapping her fingers Brooke finally grabbed the pajamma clad beauty's attention "What!" Haley shouted exasperated before immeadiately demuring.
"Sorry Brooke not everyone has the social life that you do" Haley said her eyes downcast. "I understand that T.G. but it's not like you have no one at all so I hate to see you acting like it" Brooke explained sincerely. "Brooke I'm fine just a little tired and with all that's going on between Nathan and I I'm just not in the mood ya know?" Brooke nodded in response "Thanx for worrying though" Haley added with a sweet smile.
Suddennly the bell rang flustering Brooke who abandoned getting ready sometime during their conversation. "Oh crap here's here" Brooke said referring to Lucas. "Quick! help me with my dress" Brooke stood in front of Haley's bed back turned so that she could be zipped into the rose colored slipdress that she designed. After which she rushed out of the room to open the front door for a waiting Lucas.
Falling back to the bed Haley shifted herself into a comfortable positon as she prepared to sleep. The sound of Brooke relentlessly flirting with Lucas echoed through the door of the bedroom. It caused an unsettling feeling in Haley that she could't understand and made it had for her to sleep though eventually she did.
Around 1am Haley awoke to the sound of whispered gigglingas Lucas entered the room. He was unsuccessfully trying to move Brooke's mattress into the living room quietly. Haley tried not laugh when he hit his foot on the edge of her bed letting loose a ton of expletives. Finally she sat up acting as if she'd just woken "Luke just what do you think you're doing" she asked as natural as she could. Switching on the bedroom light Lucas replied "Trying not to wake you but you see how well that went" he said with a smirk pulling the rest of the mattress through the door.
Haley fell back to the bed as Brooke came in "Aww you waited up you shouldn't have" she said grabbing a comforter from the closet and leaving. "yeah totally" Haley said sarcasticly as she covering her face with her sheet .When Brooke came back she headed straight to the bathroom presumably to get changed for bed.
Lucas came in soon after throwing his body on the bed next to Haleyand pulling the sheet from her face.
"What's up with you Hales?" he half whispered with his face was so close Haley could feel the heat radiating off of it. She knew it was nothing other than him trying to keep their conversation private that brought him so near but that didn't stop the butterflies that formed in her stomach. "hmm uh nothing much Chris and I are doing well" she stammerd before realizing how her words could be misconstrued. "I mean with our music we're working well again" she rephrased nervously.
"See this is what I mean Hales why are you so jumpy lately?" Lucas asked running a hand over her forehead as if to calm her. Haley layed speechless not realizing that she'd been so transparent. Finally pulling her self together Haley managed " I've got a lot of things on my mind but I'm fine". It was the first thing that came to mind and the most honest. Changing the subject Haley began "My question for you my friend is what's going on with you and Brooke? She hasn't seen another guy in weeks!" Haley confided. Lucas responded with a knowing smile as Brooke appeared in the doorway.
"Look Boyfriend I didn't bring you here so that you could hop into bed with another girl. Is this Dawson's Creek Do I look like Joey to you? "Brooke said with a mock glare. "But it's not a girl it's Haley!" Lucas shot back. Haley sat up quickly mouth agape insutlted and pushing Lucas abruptly to the floor. Brooke walked by looking down she playfully kicked him with her foot for good measure. "Is it safe to say I'll be seeing you in the morning" Haley said over the side of her bed "yes"
Lucas answered "goodnight Luke see you in the morning" "uhgghh he grunted."
The next morning Haley woke up to the sound of Cold play's "The message" filtering out her clock radio and through the room. Turning to face the bedroom door she saw that it was left half open. She expected to see Lucas and Brooke entwined on the mattress ,instead she saw feet one pair to be exact and they didn't belong to Brooke. Rolling on to her back Haley bit her lip as she stared at the ceiling before hopping out of bed and heading to the bathroom to start her shower.
After she was through Haley draped herself in a light pink spahghetti strapped cotton dress that criss crossed at the back. Tying her wet hair into a bun she made her way to the kitchen finding Lucas there. He stood shirtless at the fridge in nothing but his boxers drinking a glass of milk. "So where's your lady friend " Haley inquired trying not seem affected by his appearance. Instead of answering he continued drinking while picking up and holding out the note Brooke left in front of her. It explained that she was out shopping and that he was to meet up with her later at the beach.
"Grab your bikini Hales she left that hours ago and it's almost time" he said after finally putting down the glass. "Oh No" Haley said as she perched herself on a stool near the counter "Nothing in that note said anything about me luke that's all you". "Come on Hales like that matters if you don't come out with us then what are you going to do?" he asked frustrated. The beach was unsually desolate that day there wasn't that much people besides them which made their search for Brooke end rather quickly. Lucas and Haley found the bewitching brunette spawled across the surface of a blanket sunbathing.
She wore a barely there black bikini with a pink heart filled with rhinestones on the right side of her bikini bottom. Upon their arrival psychically She turned around to face them before anyone had a chance to speak. "Hey boy and girlfriend I'd thought you guys would never get here this place is soo dead." Brooke explained staring between the two.
Moments later Haley found herself watching Lucas and Brooke from the blanket as the two lovers played amongst the waves. Feeling somewhat annoyed Haley decided to surpress the emotions that were brewing in her and just relax. She had never tried to tan before and this was just as good a time as any so she decided she'd try it. Releasing the clasps on her baby blue bikini top Haley layed on her stomach trying and catch some rays.
Dozing off soon after resting down her head Haley began feeling hands rubbing something into her back. Assuming she was dreaming she let the hands roam further before realizing it was actually happening and opening her eyes. She rolled away and on to her side to see culprit "You can tell you've never done this before" Brooke stated pushing haley back on to her stomach and continuing to rub the tanning oil. "You're suppose to be lightly toasted not roasted T.G. turn over".
Embarassed Haley sat up abruptly holding the front of her suit but soon Brooke's attention was diverted as petite blonde Peyton Sawyer crossed her line of vision.
"Well look who it is be back in a jiff Hay" Brooke stated before bounding over to greet her bestfriend. Thankful to be out from under Brooke's scrunity Haley sighed then winced feeling her back start to burn. While fishing through her bag for some burn lotion "Need help with that?" she heard him say once it was in her hands.
Looking up and getting almost blinded by the sun Haley saw Lucas staring down at her. She was about to pass before remembering the rant he went on about her uneasiness around him lately and she didn't want him to make an example again so she passed him the bottle. Turning her back to him and grabbing the clasp of her suit to close it Haley was halted "You don't want tanlies right? Lucas asked brushing her hands away."Don't worry I won't look" He said with a what Haley knew was a smile she could tell from his tone.

"What's up with you Hales?" he half whispered with his face was so close Haley could feel the heat radiating off of it. She knew it was nothing other than him trying to keep their conversation private that brought him so near but that didn't stop the butterflies that formed in her stomach. "hmm uh nothing much Chris and I are doing well" she stammerd before realizing how her words could be misconstrued. "I mean with our music we're working well again" she rephrased nervously.
"See this is what I mean Hales why are you so jumpy lately?" Lucas asked running a hand over her forehead as if to calm her. Haley layed speechless not realizing that she'd been so transparent. Finally pulling her self together Haley managed " I've got a lot of things on my mind but I'm fine". It was the first thing that came to mind and the most honest. Changing the subject Haley began "My question for you my friend is what's going on with you and Brooke? She hasn't seen another guy in weeks!" Haley confided. Lucas responded with a knowing smile as Brooke appeared in the doorway.
"Look Boyfriend I didn't bring you here so that you could hop into bed with another girl. Is this Dawson's Creek Do I look like Joey to you? "Brooke said with a mock glare. "But it's not a girl it's Haley!" Lucas shot back. Haley sat up quickly mouth agape insutlted and pushing Lucas abruptly to the floor. Brooke walked by looking down she playfully kicked him with her foot for good measure. "Is it safe to say I'll be seeing you in the morning" Haley said over the side of her bed "yes"
Lucas answered "goodnight Luke see you in the morning" "uhgghh he grunted."
The next morning Haley woke up to the sound of Cold play's "The message" filtering out her clock radio and through the room. Turning to face the bedroom door she saw that it was left half open. She expected to see Lucas and Brooke entwined on the mattress ,instead she saw feet one pair to be exact and they didn't belong to Brooke. Rolling on to her back Haley bit her lip as she stared at the ceiling before hopping out of bed and heading to the bathroom to start her shower.
After she was through Haley draped herself in a light pink spahghetti strapped cotton dress that criss crossed at the back. Tying her wet hair into a bun she made her way to the kitchen finding Lucas there. He stood shirtless at the fridge in nothing but his boxers drinking a glass of milk. "So where's your lady friend " Haley inquired trying not seem affected by his appearance. Instead of answering he continued drinking while picking up and holding out the note Brooke left in front of her. It explained that she was out shopping and that he was to meet up with her later at the beach.
"Grab your bikini Hales she left that hours ago and it's almost time" he said after finally putting down the glass. "Oh No" Haley said as she perched herself on a stool near the counter "Nothing in that note said anything about me luke that's all you". "Come on Hales like that matters if you don't come out with us then what are you going to do?" he asked frustrated. "I don't know just chill out here and veg I guess" Haley said shaking her leg vigorously which she did sometimes when she was aggiatated.
"Look" Lucas said walking to stand in front of her "The truth is you're begining to worry us" He ephasized placing a hand on her leg to stop the shaking. "I told both of you already I'm fine " Haley said defiantly looking him in the eye.
"That's what you say Haley but you're focusing way too much on Nathan. I know he's your husband and I understand that but maybe if you back off then maybe he'll come around."
It killed Haley to hear it but it couldn't have come from anyone else and she knew that it was true. Pain flashed in her eyes causing Lucas to stand closer knowing he hit a nerve he explained "I know it must be very hard to fall back" He said wrapping his arms around her and leaning into her ear " but that's why I'm here to cushion you". Still holding her he moved away from her ear to look at her face kissing her nose and tapping her leg " I'll be in the car".
The beach was unsually desolate that day there wasn't that much people besides them which made their search for Brooke end rather quickly. Lucas and Haley found the bewitching brunette spawled across the surface of a blanket sunbathing.
She wore a barely there black bikini with a pink heart filled with rhinestones on the right side of her bikini bottom. Upon their arrival psychically She turned around to face them before anyone had a chance to speak. "Hey boy and girlfriend I'd thought you guys would never get here this place is soo dead." Brooke explained staring between the two.
Moments later Haley found herself watching Lucas and Brooke from the blanket as the two lovers played amongst the waves. Feeling somewhat annoyed Haley decided to surpress the emotions that were brewing in her and just relax. She had never tried to tan before and this was just as good a time as any so she decided she'd try it. Releasing the clasps on her baby blue bikini top Haley layed on her stomach trying and catch some rays.
Dozing off soon after resting down her head Haley began feeling hands rubbing something into her back. Assuming she was dreaming she let the hands roam further before realizing it was actually happening and opening her eyes. She rolled away and on to her side to see culprit "You can tell you've never done this before" Brooke stated pushing haley back on to her stomach and continuing to rub the tanning oil. "You're suppose to be lightly toasted not roasted T.G. turn over".
Embarassed Haley sat up abruptly holding the front of her suit but soon Brooke's attention was diverted as petite blonde Peyton Sawyer crossed her line of vision.
"Well look who it is be back in a jiff Hay" Brooke stated before bounding over to greet her bestfriend. Thankful to be out from under Brooke's scrunity Haley sighed then winced feeling her back start to burn. While fishing through her bag for some burn lotion "Need help with that?" she heard him say once it was in her hands.
Looking up and getting almost blinded by the sun Haley saw Lucas staring down at her. She was about to pass before remembering the rant he went on about her uneasiness around him lately and she didn't want him to make an example again so she passed him the bottle. Turning her back to him and grabbing the clasp of her suit to close it Haley was halted "You don't want tanlies right? Lucas asked brushing her hands away."Don't worry I won't look" He said with a what Haley knew was a smile she could tell from his tone.
The feeling of the cold lotion combined with Lucas's touch caused Haley to shiver.
Smirking Lucas continued messaging lotion into her skin turning serious he said "About earlier Hales I didn't mean to....."She touched the hand he placed on her shoulder causing him to pause. "No Luke you don't have to explain I needed to hear it" Haley said before closing her eyes and bracing herself to face him. "I've heard it before but I've really listened" she confessed staring into his calm blue eyes.
Suddenly Haley saw his expression change as he leaned forward placing his hands on her chest catching her suit top before it revealed her breast and starting her straight in the eye " I promised" he said to her. A blush a deep shade of crimson crept over Haley's skin as Lucas reconnected the clasp on her suit. "Thanx she whispered almost breathlessly as his face lingered for a split second and suddenly things just clicked.
A couple weeks had past since the day at the beach and it found Haley trying to keep to herself while sorting through her feelings toward the people in her life. School was tough because not only did she have Lucas and Brooke to deal with but she had to see Nathan. She was struggling everyday facing him and the more her friends tried to comfort her the more isolated she became this rang true more than anything else when it came to Lucas.
He was everything and everywhere to Haley and her growing attraction to him magnigfied this by infinity. If he wasn't stumbling into the apartment with Brooke in the wee hours of the morning he was at the cafe keeping her company while she was closing or reading in the library while she was tutoring. She did her best keeping her cool but at times she could not help the resentment she felt watching him cling to Brooke.
This soon began to poison Haley and Brooke's relationship because she'd unwittingly started letting her bitterness show. One night while the trio hung out at Tric Haley and Peyton watched as a heated make out session between Brooke and Lucas in a booth across the room ensued. This prompted Haley to walk over and speak her mind " Got air?" Haley said interupting the couple. "Tutor girl do you mind?!" Brooke stated looking up at Haley clearly annoyed "yeah well Brooke actually I do" Haley replied surprising herself. "Excuse me?" Brooke said confused as she watched the auburn haired girl fold her arms across her chest.
"Come here" Brooke said through gritted teeth before grabbing Haley 's arm and dragging her to the restroom. Lucas watched curiously as his best friend was whisked away by his denim miniskirt clad girlfriend. Once the door was closed behind them Brooke's rant began "What's your damage Haley?" she said aggrivated "Nothing Brooke" Haley said before trying to make her way past and head to the door. "Uh uh girlie I'm not buying it " Brooke said standing in front of the door and blocking Haley's way. "Somethings not right with you and for weeks you've been in this funk and I've tried everything to help but now you're just getting downright rude."
"Well I didn't ask for anyone's help" Haley said before pushing past her "and by the way I hear enough at home I really don't need visuals. You have a room use it" Walking out of the restroom leaving Brooke stunned Haley ran past Lucas and out of the club.
The cold night air burned her face and the sensation quickly traveled through her body. The realization that she was cracking finally hit and Haley wanted to cry but she couldn't. Suddenly Lucas appeared on the fire escape "What's going on Hales?"
he asked she turned to face at him shivering as opened his arms to her.
Shivering Haley walked over to him and was immediately enveloped in an embrace. Lucas pulled her closer so that his coat could hold the two of them "It's freezing out here Hales let's talk about it inside." He said trying to turn them towards the door. Wrapping her arms around his waist she squeezed halting his action "We can talk just not here" she said staring him straight in the eyes "I can't do it here ".
Confusion crossed the Handsome blondes face listening to her cryptic words but he reluctantly agreed to her request and they left. After an uncomfortable forty five minute drive outside of Tree Hill Lucas's pulled into a rest stop for gas. Haley sat quietly fiddling with the stations on the truck radio while he went inside. She had no idea exactly where they were or where he trying to take her all she knew is that when they got there she had to talk.
Haley wasn't even sure what she wanted to say but she got the impression during the drive that his patience was wearing thin. It showed in his silence, the way he stared out at the road and how he barely aknowledged her presence. She was caught off guard as he climbed back into the truck and said "We'll be there soon" before starting the ignition.
After a couple twists and turns down a dirt road that ran through a wooded area Lucas stopped in front of a beautiful oak cabin. It wasn't big but it wasn't small either it had lights perched on top of the porch railings illuminating the outside of the otherwise dark home. She looked out the window and back at him questionigly" It's my mother's friend Andy's he gave me a key before he left for New Zealand he said I could use it anytime" Lucas said answering the question her face asked.
He opened the door to the truck and hopped out then walked over to her side and opened hers. Haley was blown away when he unlocked the cabin door and turned on the lights. It looked like a winter wonderland inside with a large fireplace that was centerpiece of the living room. Lucas closed the door making her focus her attention back to him "Nice ain't it"? he asked leading Haley to the living room.
Haley sat on the large deep cocoa colored leather sectional sofa as he turned on the fireplace that was oddly enough electrical. "All that's was missing is the bear skin rug "she thought to herself but there was a nice persian one in it's place.
"Well well I see your mom has friends in high places" She said trying to lighten the mood but it didn't seem to work. He moved from where he stood near the fire place to sit on the coffee table directly in front of her. "Ok Haley what's going on because you're not the same person who left Tree hill." Haley was taken back by his bluntness but listened as he continued " I understand you're going through a lot with Nathan but you're friends are trying to help and you're pushing us away at every turn. I mean I don't know what you said to Brooke tonight but it hurt her and I know how she feels. You keep me at arms length Hales like I'm hurting you but I didn't leave you maybe you should think about that." Lucas said clenching his jaw.
"Youre right" she said clearing her throat I did leave you and I probably will never forgive myself for that so I don't expect you to." She got up and walked past him before adding "Besides what does it really matter anyway you have Brooke now". she said making Lucas's head swivel around to look at her. Haley immidiately regretted her words and recanted "Luke I didn't mean it and you're right I'm not the same" Lucas listened patiently while she talked with her back still to him.
"The truth is I'm guilty because I've been keeping something from you" Haley said staring into the flames. Exasperated Lucas asked"What is it Hales you know you can tell me anything no matter what you know I'll always be there to help you through" He said sincerely.
"That's just it Lucas I don't think you can this time" she said starting to feel her emotions start to churn. Letting out a deep breath Haley began "There's this guy she said cutting him off before he started speak " I can't get him out of my head when he's around it's hard to think and when he touches me I can hardly breathe he consumes me Lucas"Haley explained as seemed stuck in the moments that were torturing her.
She heard his footsteps as he came to stand behind her "Who is it he asked his sympathetically , Haley turned around looked up at him and he knew.

Both decided that since emotions were still raw and vague that it was best that the ramifications of their feelings would be dealt with later. This also gave Lucas time to process things which when he did he mentally kicked himself for losing his cool earlier. He had no idea how hard it must've been for Haley to open up to him and he admired her for letting him get a glimpse into the new way that she saw him. She was vulnerable looking to him for stability and he let her down but he promised himself he'd never do it again.
As the two sat watching a movie on the giant plasma tv adajacent to the couch Lucas watched out of the corner of his eye as her eyes drifted closed. He waited for the light weight of her head to fall on his shoulder.When it did Lucas released a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding and let Haley's confession truly wash over him. The sound of the rain tapping lightly against the glass of the windows provided a sountrack to the inner workings of Lucas's mind.
He sat there quietly letting the jean clad beauty use him as a pillow careful not to wake her knowing that if he if he did that she'd feel awkward. All of a sudden Lightning flashed Lighting up the sky giving way to a loud crack and the boom of thunder hitting near by jolting Haley awake. "AHhhhh "She screamed into the darkness
clutching Lucas's arm. "It's ok Hales we just lost power" he said trying to calm her "I think it's time for us to leave" she said nervously.
"Driving in this would be nuts Hales it's safer here trust me" He said before getting up. Quickly tugging on his arm "where are you going" she asked" to get some candles you stay here you don't know this house and I barely do and I don't want you to hurt yourself " he said before walking away. A moment later he reappeared
holding two candlesticks offering one to her. "Follow me" he said leading Haley upstairs to a door. He opened it revealing a room that could only bedescribed as country splendor. It had yellow colored walls with white trim that was so shiny that it resembled hard candy. The room also contained a white armoire instead of a closet that represented just a pinch of old fashion flair.
The real attraction of the room turned out to be a king sized white wiccker sleigh bed that was planted right in the center of the room. It was decorated with a fluffy yellow and white comforter and matching pillows "The bathroom is in there" Lucas said pointing the half open door on the other side of the room. Haley walked over to and stepped inside it was stark white with a whirlpool tub so big it took up half the room. " now that's hot "Haley stated mouth wide "yes it is Lucas laughed nodding agreeing with her. For that moment the issues that layed bfore them seemed to melt away and Haley enjoyed it.
"There's fresh towels on the rack and I'm right across the hall if you need anything" He said motioning with his head before turning to leave. "Wait" She said stopping him in his tracks "I don't have any night clothes" Haley stated simply.
Lucas pulled his grey and white pin striped button down over his head and handed to her "here now you do". "Thanx" she said standing there feeling akwardness creep into the room. "No problem Hales" he said before closing the door behind him. Haley then slipped out of her jeans and gold silk top and into his shirt which was soo big on her it fell to her knees.
Haley pulled down the covers and slid into bed before remembering to blow out the candle she placed on the dresser. She got up and and walked over to blow it out stopping at the door when she heard Lucas's voice. He was leaving a message for Brooke this stung Haley more than she'd cared to admit because she's just put it all on the line with no answer from him. She went back to bed letting the pillows and the comforter swallow her within them holding back tears of frustration as the scent from his shirt surrounded her.
Moments later just as the sandman was catching up with her Haley heard the creek of the door opening. She grew anxious as he drew near the floor boards reavealing his proximity her, heart raced as she felt the bed dip under his weight as he got into the bed with her. At one point she thought he would venture under the sheet with her but he only slid under the comforter but close enough. Lucas layed on his side and his position mirroring hers. Even though he was close enough to touch her he didn't staring into the blinding dark he took a breath and said "I thought about it Hales".
Haley layed quietly as Lucas continued "How could I not think about it ?You're gorgeous" He said to her back."I've thought of it Hales but I never thought I'd have to face it let alone own up to it. Covering his face "I'm seriously lost right now and I know you are too maybe we can figure this thing out together".
Haley twisted slightly toward him "tell me what you're feeling rigt now right this second"she said exasperated.. "I'm torn" he replied half of me wants to touch you so bad I'm shaking the other half....." Haley finally turned all the way around to face him moving as close to him as she could "I don't care about the other half right now"she said tracing an outline of his lips with her finger. "Haley" He whispered desparately sounding unbelieveable even to his self.
Haley said nothing but leaned in for a kiss but he quickly dodged her plunging his face into her neck and pulling her closer. "Haley" He whispered desparately sounding unbelieveable even to his self.
Haley said nothing but leaned in for a kiss but he quickly dodged her plunging his face into her neck and pulling her closer. Haley rested her right leg on his thigh as he squeezed her body tighter to him "I guess that other half can't be denied" she said softly pulling away. "I don't have to show how I feel now you can feel it but this is all that I can give you tonight" Lucas said breathlessly "Well If this is all I can get I'll take it "Haley said as she cuddled closer inhaling his scent. A couple minutes later and Haley was fast asleep "You'll thank me tomorrow" Lucas said to hisself before he himself went to dreamland.
The next morning Haley awoke to the warmth of the sun beaming on her face and the sound of running water. Twisting around she saw the vacant area where Lucas had been and panicked sitting up and drawing her knees to her chest memories of last night swirled in Haley's brain causing her to bury head in her hands. Then suddenly bathroom door opened making her head snap up. Wearing only a towel and a curious look on his face Lucas addressed her "Did I wake you?" he asked politely. "No" Haley said softly slowly shaking her head "This bathroom is the only one with that tub" he said explaining why he was using her bathroom instead of his own. After an uncomfortable silence he began again "I'm going to get dressed I want to make it back to town in time for us to get breakfast" he said motioning to the clock on the night stand that read 10:15am.
"Ok I'll start getting ready too " Haley said smiling weakly at him "alright" he said akwardly pausing at the door before exiting the room. Once the door was closed Haley took a deep breath looked around braced herself and went after him. She walked across the hall opening the door closing it quietly behind her. Leaning against it she watched as he stood with his back to her the light streaming through the windows highlighting the spots he missed drying off.
Turning slightly at the sound of the door clicking closed she watched the muscles in his back grow tense and she knew he knew she was there. By the time he turned fully Haley was already close enough to touch him. "You forgot your shirt" she explained her voice cracking as he looked down at her. Haley then proceeded to unbutton the shirt her hands shaking nervously in the process. He knew this wasn't rigt and he tried to look away but something in him just couldn't the battle of good versus temptation was evident on his face.
Lucas touched her hand just as she got down to the last button before she revealed herself and shook his head "You don't want this" he said softly staring into her eyes. Haley stared back defiantly "Yes I do and I'll show you how much"
she said standing on her tiptoes and pressing her lips to his. Lucas felt his restraint slip away as he backed her up and onto bed and into the burgundy comforter. they fell with a light thud as they continued exploring each other's mouths. after a minute Lucas pulled away slowly and searched Haley's eyes for reservations and found none. She didn't look timid anymore or scared she looked positive of what she wanted. Lifting her knees on either side of him Lucas made a trail with his hand between them staring into her face.
She stared back at him until she could stand it no longer and closed her eyes letting the tidal wave of sensations flow through her. Lucas watched facinated as her facial expressions changed with his movements and shook his head in disbelief. I'm missing you" she purred ignoring Haley who stole a glance at her as she took an order from a customer.

"I'm not concerned at all I just asked because there's no need for two of us to be stuck here. I can close up by myself I wouldn't want you to be late on the count of me" She said trying to sound like she wasn't affected by the malice in his tone.
Haley continued wiping the table as she waited for his answer "but it wouldn't be on the count of you" Lucas said with a devilish glint in his eye. It annoyed him all day that she ignored him and he wanted to get the best of her. "I know I just meant...." exasperated Haley stopped cleaning the table to explain herself only to be interupted by a knock at the door. "Hey man where closed" Lucas called out to the stranger outside the last word dying on his lips.
Lucas's reaction caused Haley's head to swivel in the direction of the door. There she saw Nathan standing expectantly "I guess you better better get that" Lucas said softly before clearing his throat and grabbing his jacket from the rack. Haley watched conflicted as he somewhat angrily shrugged into his coat " Well like I said I have somewhere to be and i don't want to be late." he said walking towards the door. Rushing over Haley opened it before he got there "Thanx for letting me go Hales" he said as he passed between her and Nathan. His words hit Haley like a punch to the gut and she watched as he walked away into the night until he could no longer be seen.
Later that night Haley moved around the apartment in a daze after Nathan dropped her off. He came to the cafe saying everything she wanted to hear since she'd been back like wanting to start fresh and giving them another shot. Instead of the happiness this revelation would have caused a couple months ago it made her feel trapped. She played the scene over in her head as she walked over to the vanity mirror, the way Nathan caressed her cheek as he spoke mingled with flashes of a hurt Lucas leaving the cafe all of it overwhelmed her.
Haley stared at the reflection staring back at her wondering if someone was playing a sick joke on her for being so wreckless. "This would have never happened is you hadn't pushed it" she said to herself turning toward the door when she heard Brooke's key jingle as she entered the apartment. Brooke took her time in the kitchen so by the time she made it to their room Haley was already sitting on her bed.
Brooke walked barefoot into the room pulling her chesnut brown tresses from a pony tail and wiping off her lipstick with a tissue. Sitting indian style Haley watched from her bed as Brooke went from vamp to camp in a matter of seconds "So what's going on between you two?" Brooke asked suddenly as she leaned back against the dresser her feet crossing at the ankles. "Oh we're speaking now?" Haley asked sarcastically causing Brooke to shoot her a warning glare in response.
"Nothing Brooke" Haley said staring down at her hands but looking up after she said her name " Don't lie to me Haley you're really not in the position to" she said seriously "There's this weird vibe between you two and I wasn't going to say anything but there are just some thing I can't ignore" Brooke said putting an emphasis on the word "can't". "I don't know what you're talking about" Haley said trying to brush her off her guilt quickly surfacing. "You can't even look at me when you say that" Brooke stated before continuing " It's not that I have some kind of burning desire to know your business but whatever is going on between you guys isn't only effecting you two anymore"
"What do you mean by that?" Haley asked a lot louder than she intended but before Brooke could answer the telephone rang freezing the tension like a bell in a boxing match and annoying her. Brooke hesitated a moment before leaving the room to grab the cordless leaving Haley relieved that she was out of her line of fire. Haley contemplated waiting to continue the conversation because she wanted to know what Brooke had to say but she saw the interuption as a sign that maybe she wasn't ready to hear it. So Haley decided to sleep on it she knew the momentum was gone and that when Brooke eventually did return she wouldn't wake her.
The next afternoon Haley carefully navigated the halls of the school hoping to go unoticed. She Passed the gym a fast as she could knowing that Nathan and lucas would be there she stopped only to give a quick greeting to coach Durham as she made her way to the library. Once inside she let out a sigh of relief before turning around to see Lucas huddled over a book with a caramel skinned beauty. The girl wore a thigh high blue jean skirt, a red tiny tee and flip flops her brown hair streaked with a touch of gold was pulled up into a bunned pont tail. Nothing about her was threatning but the mere sight of her with Lucas brought Haley's blood to a broil.
This is what made her march over and make her presence known " Hey Luke what are you doing here?" she said once got to their table. Looking up Lucas took in her appearance and was immidately intrigued he could see what she was feeling because he'd felt it too. Suddenly Haley became keenly aware of their Location and pulled away, running a hand through her touseled waves she leaned back against the book case for support. "Your right Luke" she said once she caught her breath "There is no going back but the question now is how do we move forward" she said walking past him.

"Peyton's in the shower she should be out soon" Haley replied awkwardly. Leaning forward Haley wrapped her arms around Brooke burying her face in her shoulder. She just couldn't lie to her again evrything was not alright and she wouldn't pinky swear on it. Moments later peyton appeared without missing a beat "I was wondering when you two would bury the hatchett" she said tucking her towel under her arm to keep it in place. Laughing Brooke and Haley pulled away from each other to look at the statuesque blonde Haley wiping away the tears that both miss took for happiness. The night was then spent laughing ,eating and catching up on their lives. As time went on Haley kept her distance from Lucas trying her best to reestablish her and Brooke's friendship. This frustrated him she could tell everytime she was around them which became more and more often. Haley made a point of never being alone with him knowing that he'd pull her aside and she would crumble. This time Haley would follow through with their first plan they both had so much to lose and she didn't want to risk it. One day while Brooke was at cheer leading practice there was a knock at the door while walking over to it Haley tied hair into a knot in the before opening it. Lucas stood with his arm leaning against the frame "Don't get your hair in a twist" He smirked pushing past her "but we need to talk" he said sitting in the middle of the couch. Haley closed the door and leaned against it not wanting to get any closer than she had to be "ok lets talk" she said evenly. "I know what your thinking and believe it or not this is hard for me too,I don't want to be that guy again to her Hales we both know she never deserved it." he said his eyes down cast. Suddenly Haley was dealt another blow when she realized that while dodging Lucas she was not only dodging the guy she was falling for but she was also slowly phasing out her best friend Luke. All this time she was so wrapped up in herself that she didn't see that Luke needed his friend and with that Haley's heart broke. Lifting his head Lucas began to speak pulling Haley from her thoughts " I love her Hales but not in the way you thinkand the reality is that if I loved her the way she loves me I would've never hurt her" he explained looking away in shame. "She changed for me ya know? She became everything I could want in a nother person so I should love her shouldn't I?" Lucas said to himself more than to Haley. "Then why?" Haley heard herself say hoarsely breaking the brief silence that nestled between them. "Why am I with her again?" Lucas asked inching closer to her "Because I was lonely and so was she" he said finshing Haley's sentence. "And I thought I could be better for her this time but I reliazed I didn't love her,I loved the changes that she made for me and I was proud of her but it wasn't love." Haley sat silently taking it all in when it dawned on her making her repeat the words he said the first night she told him how she felt "Luke is this real?" "Yes" Lucas replied taking her face in his hands. "How do you know?" Haley asked softly staring into his eyes "because I'm willing to risk everything to find out" Closing her eyes Haley leaned forward resting her head on his shoulder. They were both so lost in the moment they didn't hear Brooke when she opened the door. Brooke took a moment to survey the scene before bounding over and throwing herself into Lucas and Haley's laps. "It's about time things got back to good with you two" she said looking up at Lucas who was holding her upper half. Moving down and swinging her legs off of Haley Brooke postioned herself between them wrapping an arm aound each of their shoulders. Pulling them close she brought their heads to rest against hers "You guys were all over the place for a while I'm glad you're back I missed you". This made Lucas stand offering Brooke his hand when he did knowing it was either now or never. " Let's get out of here" he said to Brooke glancing at Haley who wouldn't look back "Where are we going?" she asked leaning back into the cushions pulling a weary Haley along with her. "You'll just have to come and find out" he said trying to lure her to come with him. "Ok say I go with you what about tutor girl here" Brooke said squeezing the arm she placed around haley and raising a brow making Haley chime in. " Don't worry about me I have some things I have to do around here I'm fine you guys go " Haley said trying not to give any hint of her real emotions. "Cool just let me change then" Brooke said getting up from the couch and heading to the bedroom. Once they were alone Lucas looked down at Haley leaning forward he touched her face. Turning away from his hand she let a single tear escape her eye quickly wiping it away right before Brooke reappeared. Looking chic in a long gray vintage t-shirt with a chunky black belt that hung loosely on her waist, a faded blue jean cutoff mini and gray leggings Brooke stalked back into the living room. "Let's blow this joint boyfriend" she said playfully twirling her purse around her finger and dragging Lucas through the door "later TG" she hollered to haley before it closed. Haley crumbled as soon as she heard the car pull away knowing that once they returned that she'd lose her. In her last act as a friend Haley pulled herself together reached over picked up the phone and made a call. Meanwhile Lucas watched as Brooke ran along the beach trying to coax him into chasing her. Walking slowly along the sand he basked in the warmth of her smile knowing that in a moment it would soon fade. Finally giving in Lucas gave chase wrapping his arms around her waist and sweeping her into the air making her squeal. Noticing that it was getting cold he placed his jacket around her shoulders "Let's get you home cinderella it's almost midnight" Lucas said taking her hand. Following her to her door Lucas tugged lightly on her arm making Brooke turn in response "Aren't you coming in?" She asked smiling up at him innocently. "Not tonight" he answered softly looking down gathering his nerve under the scrunity of her questioning gaze. "I don't deserve you" he began looking down at her. The tone of his voice alarmed her and a look concern crossed her features as he continued "And right now you definitely deserve better than me you deserve...." "Wait a minute are you breaking up with me?" she asked incredulously fighting back tears Lucas stood silently his face conveying everything that he couldn't say. Suddenly her demeanor changed and she responded "How can you tell me I deserve better than you for me there is no better than you! You make me happy don't you get it?but hey fool me once shame on you but fool me twice... "she shrugged as tears started spilling down her face. Turning away from him she tried unsuccessfully to put her key in the door only to have it open from the other side. Haley stood frozen in the doorway holding her bags her eyes Locking with Brooke's. One look at Haley and the bags and Brooke whipped around to Lucas who opened his mouth to speak and was met with her hand connecting with his face. The Loud crack sliced through the windy night air and startled Haley making her jump in surprise. His brows furrowed in pain as he touched his cheek "On second thought you're right I don't deserve you" she said pushing Haley against the door as she walked past. Closing the door Haley silently walked past Lucas with her head down taking one last glance at the door he followed suit. Peyton caught the Haley's eye as she sat in her car and waiting to comfort Brooke. Haley had called and said that Brooke would need her tonight she wasn't exactly sure what was going on but after watching the confrontation she had a pretty good Idea. "Thank you" Haley mouthed silently to Peyton before ducking into Lucas's car and speeding off into the night. The ride to Lucas's house was long and silent and even though it took only fifteen minutes it was the longest fifteen minutes of Haley's life. As soon as Lucas pulled up to the curb Haley hopped out of the car making her way to porch door before the car was off. She waited by the door holding her bags patiently for him to come and unlock it "you know I would've helped you with those" he said pointing to the bags that hung from her shoulders. "I know " Haley said looking down at her feet as he started fishing through his back pocket for his keys. After opening the door Lucas made a quick turn grabbing the straps of her bags off her shoulder and resting them in a corner once they entered his room. "I have to talk to my mom for a sec I'll be right back" he said watching her nod anxiously before closing the door behind himself. Once it was closed Haley dived face first into his bed closing her eyes tightly trying to erase the hurt look on Brooke's face that was etched in her brain. Turning onto her side Haley curled herself in to ball as hot tears began to stream down her face "what am I doing?"she thought to herself when she heard the door swing open. Lucas entered the room quietly just in case she'd fallen asleep though now he could tell that she wasn't. He watched as her body quivered from her sobbing and layed be side her resting his chin on her shoulder he put her mind at ease" I know that what happened back there was ugly and for that I'm sorry but as bad as it was it was worth it" He whispered in her ear pulling her back against him and squeezing her. Before either one of them knew it they were both fast asleep putting the trying day behind them and looking forward to the unknown. The next morning when Haley opened her eyes the first thing she saw was Lucas when they came into focus. He had been staring at her for about ten minutes "morning sunshine" he said smiling at her. When Haley's vision cleared she saw the look in his eyes and blushed "were you watching me sleep?" she asked "And what if I was" he responded "Could that be more cheesey?" Haley laughed pushing his arm playfully. "This is soo weird Luke me waking up in your bed I mean don't you think?" "Yeah it kinda is but it feels good doesn't it? he asked moving closer to her she nodded her head slowly her eyes travelling down to his lips. "UH huh" Haley said covering his mouth when he leaned over her "It's too early in the morning and we both know what that means "Morning breath" they said in unison laughing. Falling back to the bed Lucas folding his hands and placing them behind his head. He watched as Haley rolled out of bed wearing the same blue jeans and gray t'shirt she wore the night before. Walking over to the corner and kneeling before her bags Haley felt the heat of his stare but unlike the last time she stood up and turned to face him. His eyes shined as he watched her making her feel self concious" I have to get ready for work"she stuttered before hastily making her exit. Lucas smiled to himself once she left thinking about the fact that unlike before he knew why she was nervous around him. What she didn't realize was that he felt the same way she'd awakened a feeling in him the layed dormant in him for years when she told him how she felt. Later that day when she got to the cafe Haley was reminded of trouble that lie ahead when Deb entered the cafe. She avoided talking to her by heading to the back room for a bathroom break until the coast was clear. Leaving the restroom Haley bumped into Karen" Is everything alright sweetie because you've been a little jumpy today?" The Raven haired beauty asked "I'm fine" Haley responded qiuckly trying to move past her "are you sure? Because you almost never spend the night anymore and If I recall correctly when you were younger when you did if you slept in Lucas's room there was usually fairly big problem." "Seriously I'm fine I just needed to touch base with him ya know we're both getting older and going in different directions so we don't get lost in the shuffle" Haley explained hoping she would buy it. She hated lying to Karen she was like a mother to her but she felt like she had no option. Karen wouldn't be able to understand what was going on between her and Lucas because Haley could hardly unserstand it herself. A warm smile slowly formed on Karens face letting Haley know that her answer was satisfactory. Haley then made her move to leave when Karen moved forward to embrace her kissing her on her for head before heading back into the dining area. After returning to Tree Hill from her tour Haley James Scott found herself haunting the streets of her home town like a phantom. Haley got a job working as a receptionist at a local law firm. After coming home and finding her and Nathan's apartment abandoned Haley decided to take over the payments and live there on her own. Although she came back for him coming home and finding Nathan gone was kind of a relief because she thought that if she saw him she would fall apart anyway. So for the the first couple of weeks that Haley was in town she became a hermit only leaving the apartment to get food or go to work. Though she still saw Nathan around town encounters were avoided by Haley's quick thinking and or by the grace of god. Either way she Knew that she just wasn't ready to face the fact that her marriage might very well be a failure. She also knew that looking into Nathan's sullen blue eyes full all the hurt and despair that she caused him would cement that fact.
Then there was Lucas the last time she saw him she broke his heart by telling him she wouldn't be coming home. The Look on his face when she uttered the words said it all. She saw the last bit of light fade in the ocean of blue that are his eyes. When he held her whispering consoling words into her ear she knew that it wasn't her that he was speaking to it was himself. Haley wanted to take it back immediately but a voice inside her kept her frozen in his embrace,as harsh or selfish as it seems she just wanted to stay there forever.
Even though they weren't as close as they used to be Haley knew that he'd had as rough of a year as she did. When Lucas came to her she knew that it was because something was wrong or things weren't normal. She knew this because whenever anything went wrong with his or her life they would go to each
other. She new that she was his safe haven his "normal" and he wanted to return to it. So if having Nathan visit her on tour rocked her world having Lucas show up surely shattered it.
Ch.2
Though Haley had never loved a guy the way she loved Nathan what she felt for Lucas was different. She had to build what she had with Nathan so she was much more cautious of hurting him than she was of Lucas. Until the day that Lucas visited her on tour she didn't realize how she had taken the bond the they shared for granted. Haley loved Lucas she always did it was built into her DNA he never had to work for it it was just there. So it was equally wrong to dismiss their friendship and her marriage to chase some rock'n roll fantasy that she had.
Although she had been back a while she didn't see Lucas either however they did keep in touch through phone conversations. This is where Haley found out about the demise of Lucas and Nathan's relationship which kept her away from both of them. She had always been the gate keeper of their fragile friendship making sure misunderstanding were understood and unforgiven's were forgiven. Then she just up and left leaving the brother's carefully cultivated friendship to crumble around them. This was where she had felt she had really let Nathan and Lucas down and to her it was unforgivable.
As the summer wore on life became not easier but more tolerable for Haley. She enjoyed her independence and slowly came around to talking to her husband even if it was by phone. While things weren't settled they were being mended and both she and Nathan decided that they would move slow. As far as her and Lucas went after a month of soul searching she had finally gathered the courage to face him once again. This is where things got complicated.........

After more time had passed Haley finally agreed to meet up with Lucas to hang out. This was in part because of loneliness but mainly because she just missed him and she knew she had to face the world again at some point.
The outing was pretty basic dinner and maybe a movie after. Lucas had suggested going to Tric but Haley wanted to ease back into society not get body slammed. So they decided on something neutral a new place in town called Tomas's Taqueria.
Lucas told Haley he'd pick her up at her place at seven so naturally Haley started getting ready at 6:30. After a quick shower Haley wracked her brain looking for something to wear. She finally decided on the casual cool combination of form fitting paper denim and cloth blue jean capris with a white sheer tunic with a white cami underneath she finished the outfit with white flip flops. Not wanting to fuss over her appearance Haley decided on a limited amount of cosmetics.
Maybe it was because of all the gunk that the make up artists plastered on her
face while on tour but some nights Haley seriously thought that she would Melt out there. So she just ended up putting on a little bit of lip gloss, eyeliner and mascara.
This was Haley au natural for the 1st time in a while and she was loving the feeling of it. For a split second she contemplated wrestling with her hair before ultimately keeping with low key theme of her ensemble and letting her damp hair
air dry into the soft waves she often wore as a child.
Just as she was surveying the mess that she had just made getting ready Haley heard the bell ring almost making her jump out of her skin. She walked to the door tentatively before opening it with an involuntary pause. Then there Lucas stood smiling with the same familiar warmth that he always had and Haley wasn't prepared for the rush of emotions that she felt. They ranged from Guilt, anxiousness, nervousness and finally joy.
Lucas immediately stepped forward to envelop Haley into a hug that she knew all to well but didn't realize she missed until the moment their bodies touched. Haley turned her face into his neck and inhaled his scent she didn't realize that she was clinging to him until she felt him gently pull away. He then looked at her with concern in his pale blue eyes and asked "Hales you ok?" To which she replied " yeah Eugene" referring to his seldom used middle name. He gave her a faux look of warning that got them both laughing and with that the ice had been broken.
Ch.4
After dinner Haley really wasn't feeling up to going to see a movie so they decided to go back to the apartment to catch up. When Lucas pulled up outside something strange happened Haley had the distinct feeling of uneasiness setting in. She just chalked it up to the burritos they just ate not agreeing with her and she mentioned it to Lucas as they were going up the stairs which got her a grin.
Once they got to the door Haley hesitated once again before opening it this time she had to wonder why. Once they were inside Haley excused herself and went to her room to get comfortable. Ten minutes later Haley emerged from her room wearing gray Joe boxer girl boxers w/ teddy bears on it and a matching tank.
She had her hair wound tight in a french roll held together by her trusty scrunchie claws. Lucas had already made his self comfortable laying on the couch playing a video game that Nathan had left.
Haley stood behind him quietly watching him play the game. Something must have not went his way because she heard him start to swear softly. This made Haley laugh and before she knew it Lucas quickly swung his head round to face her.
He then joking told her that it was not polite to spy on guests Haley just rolled her eyes and took a seat next to her "best friend". Haley actually hated that term she knew that was what he was but the truth is that he was so much more than that. Lucas was a lot more than that to a lot of people in this town and it seemed to Haley that at times Lucas was the planet that everyone revolved around
so it was unfair to put him into such a small category.
So there they were Haley and Luke just like old times she thought. They were laying on the fold out bed that the couch converted to listening to Jeff Buckley
playing a video game that Haley had no business playing. Yeah Haley thought just like old times except it wasn't. When it was Lucas's turn to play Haley layed on her side intently watching him not knowing she was also being watched. Lucas was looking at Haley through the corner of his eye and saw his friend boring a hole into his head so he finally decided to ask what was up.
This flustered Haley and got an amused expression from Lucas but to her relief he just brushed it off making a joke about how she couldn't help herself. After a while Haley was sick of sucking at the game and the two decided to fill each other in on what they'd missed while they were apart. A while later after the conversation had died down Haley started drifting to sleep. Then suddenly she felt Lucas run his hand along the side of her arm leaving goose bumps in it's wake. The sensation was so electric that it made the tiny hairs on Haley's arm stand on end. She felt strange and excited all at once it seemed like he was trying to wake her gently.
Haley layed there a while taking in the warmth of his hand against her cool skin before finally pretending to stir. When she opened her eyes she found Lucas looking at her with the most warm, caring and innocent expression she had ever seen. It was an expression not unlike the one Nathan wore on his face when he came to her room the night that he overdosed. Haley looked up at him through lidded eyes not sure of what he was going to say. Leaning over her like a guardian angel he just said the simplest thing " I'm glad you're back Hales". He then proceeded to pull her into himself as tears welled in her eyes and threatened to overflow. Haley sank into the comfort that Lucas offered knowing that this was a sign of forgiveness and though she did not feel worthy she accepted.
Ch.5
Over the next couple of weeks Haley & Lucas seemed to get their relationship back on track but it was not without a few speed bumps. Namely Nathan it was like he was always in the room the topic of him loomed but was never discussed.The same could be said of Lucas whenever Nathan and Haley had their late night conversations. Haley knew that sooner or later that she would have to see Nathan so during one of her nightly chats with him she casually brought up getting together just to test the water.
Friday evening after work as Haley rounded the corner of her office building she saw a black Range Rover. She also saw a handsome dark haired young man leaning against it it took a while for Haley to register that it was Nathan. Haley walked cautiously toward her husband unsure of how to react. She hadn't actually asked him to come but she could not avoid him either. Once she got within a few feet of him Haley just opted to smile and say "Hey there mister". Nathan greeted her with an "Hey Hales" as He gathered her into his arms. This some what caught Haley off guard and she stiffened but she quickly recovered and began to relax. "If he wasn't going be affected by this she thought then neither was she.
After some awkward attempts at a conversation Nathan offered his wife a ride home. The ride to the apartment was surprisingly easy going and Haley felt grateful that they kept in touch. Although things were weird earlier once they got in the car the barrier had faltered a bit which she knew wouldn't have happened if they hadn't kept as much contact as they did. Nathan teased her a bit about looking older in her work clothes which consisted of black knee length skirt , a black & white ribbon belt that Haley had tied into a bow at the waist and a tucked in white blouse the look was completed by black & white hot kiss pumps. Haley was about to Zing him right back when Nathan cut her off by placing a hand on her knee and telling her that he thought she also looked beautiful. Haley's knee burned under Nathan's hand and she became nervous Nathan became aware of it and removed his hand. By the time they pulled up outside her complex the crash course in polite conversation was through.
Nathan turned off the car and turned to Haley he was silent for a few moments it seemed to Haley that he was searching for the right words." It's killing me Haley"
he said honestly" It's killing me to be here with you but not "with" you you know?
Haley nodded shortly and waited for him to continue " Do you know why I showed up?" he asked Haley shook her head motioning no " because I knew that you wouldn't". This was when Haley chose to speak again she began to explain how much she wanted to see him but how it became easier not to. After the rush of words finished tumbling out of her mouth she sat quietly for a while before softly grazing her hand against Nathan's cheek. Unexpectedly Nathan leaned in closer to her,soon he was so close that Haley could feel his breath on her face.
Haley came to the realization that it was she who unconsciously intiated his reaction. She wanted to be close to him it was unnatural for her not to be
Nathan held her face and moved in effectively tangling his hands in her hair as he touched his lips to hers. The kiss was soft and soothing at first but it grew more intense by the second. As things got more passionate Nathan tightened his grip on Haley moving his hands down her back and moving his attention to her neck this made Haley involuntarily close her eyes and when she opened them the face she saw wasn't Nathan's.............
Ch. 6
After the evening of the car incident with Nathan it would seem to the outside world that Haley was avoiding Lucas like the plague. This was because she was and Haley hated herself for it she knew that although it wasn't his fault that he felt responsible for her avoidance. She heard it in his tone every time she turned down an invitation to get together.
Haley knew that whatever "this" was That it would play itself out one way or another and she wasn't about to lose a her best friend over something so trivial.
So after about two weeks of hiding Haley went to his mother's cafe. When She got to the door of Karen's she contemplated leaving but knew it was too late when she saw him. The bell over the doorway chimed as Haley stepped inside Lucas was sitting at the counter facing away from the door his usually spiky blonde head newly shorn and buried in a book. He barely acknowledged the sound of the bell so Haley decided to creep up behind him.
She tentatively placed her hands over Lucas's eyes this made him jump slightly in response. "I knew you couldn't stay away he said as Haley rolled her eyes in mock annoyance. Lucas said her name and she released him he then swung around to face her amusement plainly evident on his face. This relieved Haley but it was short lived because this rapidly gave way to concern as their laughter died down. Lucas rested his book down behind the counter slid off his stool and took Haley by the hand. Without a word He lead Haley out of the cafe and on to the sidewalk in front of it.
The two of them then began walking in slow careful strides to no where in particular. They walked in silence for a minute before Lucas turned to her" It's Nathan isn't it? Haley barely had time to process his words before he continued
" Don't say that it isn't because I can feel it". Had it been a couple of weeks ago he would've been right but tonight he was clueless and for that Haley was grateful.
Haley decided to follow his lead and began to tell him about seeing Nathan again.
Though she did not go into the details of the meeting she did tell Lucas about keeping in touch. If nothing else it was a chance to clear the air Haley didn't like keeping important things from him. Maybe this way it wouldn't be such a taboo subject she thought. After talking to Lucas she found out it was Nathan who severed ties to him and she was shocked. If that was a shock to her system then finding out that it was because Lucas betrayed Dan completely took her by surprise.
This is because Haley used to talk to Nathan about Lucas when they first began to acknowledge each other as brothers and found out that Nathan had always wanted Lucas in his life. The fact that he Let their father come between them for as long as he did he regretted above all else. So Haley couldn't comprehend how he let Dan do it again.
Without intending to they reached a destination it was Lucas' house. Haley followed him to the little red door on the side of the porch it was a door she'd entered countless times before to get to his room. She walked in and found that it had been changed she figured it would be since his ex-girlfriend Brooke had taken refuge there for the last couple months of the school year. As Haley had done many times before she found her spot on the upper left hand corner of his bed.
Lucas sprawled across the middle of the bed diagonally and started talking. Haley just sat there with her back against the headboard listening absorbing the feeling of the normality that she had taken for granted before. She suddenly felt sadness
slowly seeping into her system it was the sadness of knowing the love that she shared with Lucas and Nathan would slip away.

Haley sat there staring at Lucas who was still talking but Haley was in another world. Lucas looked up from where he layed and snapped his fingers hoping to get the auburn haired beauty's attention. "Hales you in there?' he asked Haley smiled her hazel eyes twinkling "hmmm" she said "why have you been so distant? Lucas asked finally getting back to the cause of this excursion. Haley knew it would eventually gotten back to this and she was too tired to put up a front. She tugged on his arm and pulled him into a position where they lay facing one other.
Lucas looked at her his eyes revealing the curiosity and confusion that he was obviously feeling. Haley ran her hand along his jaw line choosing to let her actions speak for her. He was about to say something when she placed an index finger over his lips and licked her own. She moved in close enough to inhale the breath he was exhaling she could tell he was torn. When she felt him caress her forearm Haley's eyes rolled closed.

As Lucas neared he leaned over to hover near her ear before whispering "If this is the only way that I can be close to you again I'll take it. Just tell me one thing what is going on in here." He moved back and slowly ran his thumb across her forehead. This shattered something in Haley because the tears that threatened to flow many times before finally did. "I have no Idea what I'm doing Luke " She said through her tears. Haley covered her face as she continued her confession Lucas moved her hands and layed back beside her as she continued.
" At the beginning of the year I was in High school, I wanted to go to college, I had parents Luke!" She Almost shouted. "Now Look at me I'm 16 going on 30 I'm in a failing marriage with a dead end job and I'm basically an orphan."Lucas just layed there patiently listening "You know what's the worst part of it all?" She asked "It was all my fault." After those the words came out the realization hit her hard and she grew quiet.
Haley looked over at him and saw him taking all the information in and then he spoke"I'll be here for whatever you need all I ask is that you let me in Hales."
His voice was as soft and soothing as lullaby to Haley he had that way about him . The way that made her feel that the outside world couldn't touch her and that's why she wanted him the way that she did. She wanted to make him feel like he made her feel she wanted to take all his burdens away. They both layed there in silence Haley thinking about what she was about to do just moments before her melt down.
Though she knew that it wouldn't make the situation any better she still wanted to be close to him.She wanted to know him like she never had and she knew she'd never have the nerve again so she rolled on her side to face him. She prepared herself once again she licked her lips and she traced her finger along the edge of his bottom lip. This time when she leaned in he met her half way........

His Lips slid against hers awakening every sense in Haley's body and setting them on fire. The rest of the next hour Lucas was the only thing that Haley knew on this earth he consumed her. She lost herself in all the sensations he evoked it culminated in one of the most passionate kisses that Haley had ever experienced.
After Lying there a while Haley felt him loosen his hold from around her waist and heard his breathing change and knew he was fast asleep. She took this opportunity to analyze the situation, it wasn't the fact that she had just made love with Lucas that she couldn't wrap her head around it was the fact that it didn't happen sooner. Haley knew in her heart that she had to savor this moment because it would never be the same nights like this happened once in a lifetime.
Haley was alright with the revelation because she knew it could never be and as bad as it sounds she unconsciously achieved what she set out to and that was reconnect with him and herself. She also realized that in a strange way she unburdened him for that hour and gave him all she had.
After returning to Tree Hill from her tour Haley James Scott found herself haunting the streets of her home town like a phantom. Haley got a job working as a receptionist at a local law firm. After coming home and finding her and Nathan's apartment abandoned Haley decided to take over the payments and live there on her own. Although she came back for him coming home and finding Nathan gone was kind of a relief because she thought that if she saw him she would fall apart anyway. So for the the first couple of weeks that Haley was in town she became a hermit only leaving the apartment to get food or go to work. Though she still saw Nathan around town encounters were avoided by Haley's quick thinking and or by the grace of god. Either way she Knew that she just wasn't ready to face the fact that her marriage might very well be a failure. She also knew that looking into Nathan's sullen blue eyes full all the hurt and despair that she caused him would cement that fact.
Then there was Lucas the last time she saw him she broke his heart by telling him she wouldn't be coming home. The Look on his face when she uttered the words said it all. She saw the last bit of light fade in the ocean of blue that are his eyes. When he held her whispering consoling words into her ear she knew that it wasn't her that he was speaking to it was himself. Haley wanted to take it back immediately but a voice inside her kept her frozen in his embrace,as harsh or selfish as it seems she just wanted to stay there forever.
Even though they weren't as close as they used to be Haley knew that he'd had as rough of a year as she did. When Lucas came to her she knew that it was because something was wrong or things weren't normal. She knew this because whenever anything went wrong with his or her life they would go to each
other. She new that she was his safe haven his "normal" and he wanted to return to it. So if having Nathan visit her on tour rocked her world having Lucas show up surely shattered it.
Ch.2
Though Haley had never loved a guy the way she loved Nathan what she felt for Lucas was different. She had to build what she had with Nathan so she was much more cautious of hurting him than she was of Lucas. Until the day that Lucas visited her on tour she didn't realize how she had taken the bond the they shared for granted. Haley loved Lucas she always did it was built into her DNA he never had to work for it it was just there. So it was equally wrong to dismiss their friendship and her marriage to chase some rock'n roll fantasy that she had.
Although she had been back a while she didn't see Lucas either however they did keep in touch through phone conversations. This is where Haley found out about the demise of Lucas and Nathan's relationship which kept her away from both of them. She had always been the gate keeper of their fragile friendship making sure misunderstanding were understood and unforgiven's were forgiven. Then she just up and left leaving the brother's carefully cultivated friendship to crumble around them. This was where she had felt she had really let Nathan and Lucas down and to her it was unforgivable.
As the summer wore on life became not easier but more tolerable for Haley. She enjoyed her independence and slowly came around to talking to her husband even if it was by phone. While things weren't settled they were being mended and both she and Nathan decided that they would move slow. As far as her and Lucas went after a month of soul searching she had finally gathered the courage to face him once again. This is where things got complicated.........

After more time had passed Haley finally agreed to meet up with Lucas to hang out. This was in part because of loneliness but mainly because she just missed him and she knew she had to face the world again at some point.
The outing was pretty basic dinner and maybe a movie after. Lucas had suggested going to Tric but Haley wanted to ease back into society not get body slammed. So they decided on something neutral a new place in town called Tomas's Taqueria.
Lucas told Haley he'd pick her up at her place at seven so naturally Haley started getting ready at 6:30. After a quick shower Haley wracked her brain looking for something to wear. She finally decided on the casual cool combination of form fitting paper denim and cloth blue jean capris with a white sheer tunic with a white cami underneath she finished the outfit with white flip flops. Not wanting to fuss over her appearance Haley decided on a limited amount of cosmetics.
Maybe it was because of all the gunk that the make up artists plastered on her
face while on tour but some nights Haley seriously thought that she would Melt out there. So she just ended up putting on a little bit of lip gloss, eyeliner and mascara.
This was Haley au natural for the 1st time in a while and she was loving the feeling of it. For a split second she contemplated wrestling with her hair before ultimately keeping with low key theme of her ensemble and letting her damp hair
air dry into the soft waves she often wore as a child.
Just as she was surveying the mess that she had just made getting ready Haley heard the bell ring almost making her jump out of her skin. She walked to the door tentatively before opening it with an involuntary pause. Then there Lucas stood smiling with the same familiar warmth that he always had and Haley wasn't prepared for the rush of emotions that she felt. They ranged from Guilt, anxiousness, nervousness and finally joy.
Lucas immediately stepped forward to envelop Haley into a hug that she knew all to well but didn't realize she missed until the moment their bodies touched. Haley turned her face into his neck and inhaled his scent she didn't realize that she was clinging to him until she felt him gently pull away. He then looked at her with concern in his pale blue eyes and asked "Hales you ok?" To which she replied " yeah Eugene" referring to his seldom used middle name. He gave her a faux look of warning that got them both laughing and with that the ice had been broken.

After dinner Haley really wasn't feeling up to going to see a movie so they decided to go back to the apartment to catch up. When Lucas pulled up outside something strange happened Haley had the distinct feeling of uneasiness setting in. She just chalked it up to the burritos they just ate not agreeing with her and she mentioned it to Lucas as they were going up the stairs which got her a grin.
Once they got to the door Haley hesitated once again before opening it this time she had to wonder why. Once they were inside Haley excused herself and went to her room to get comfortable. Ten minutes later Haley emerged from her room wearing gray Joe boxer girl boxers w/ teddy bears on it and a matching tank.
She had her hair wound tight in a french roll held together by her trusty scrunchie claws. Lucas had already made his self comfortable laying on the couch playing a video game that Nathan had left.
Haley stood behind him quietly watching him play the game. Something must have not went his way because she heard him start to swear softly. This made Haley laugh and before she knew it Lucas quickly swung his head round to face her.
He then joking told her that it was not polite to spy on guests Haley just rolled her eyes and took a seat next to her "best friend". Haley actually hated that term she knew that was what he was but the truth is that he was so much more than that. Lucas was a lot more than that to a lot of people in this town and it seemed to Haley that at times Lucas was the planet that everyone revolved around
so it was unfair to put him into such a small category.
So there they were Haley and Luke just like old times she thought. They were laying on the fold out bed that the couch converted to listening to Jeff Buckley
playing a video game that Haley had no business playing. Yeah Haley thought just like old times except it wasn't. When it was Lucas's turn to play Haley layed on her side intently watching him not knowing she was also being watched. Lucas was looking at Haley through the corner of his eye and saw his friend boring a hole into his head so he finally decided to ask what was up.
This flustered Haley and got an amused expression from Lucas but to her relief he just brushed it off making a joke about how she couldn't help herself. After a while Haley was sick of sucking at the game and the two decided to fill each other in on what they'd missed while they were apart. A while later after the conversation had died down Haley started drifting to sleep. Then suddenly she felt Lucas run his hand along the side of her arm leaving goose bumps in it's wake. The sensation was so electric that it made the tiny hairs on Haley's arm stand on end. She felt strange and excited all at once it seemed like he was trying to wake her gently.
Haley layed there a while taking in the warmth of his hand against her cool skin before finally pretending to stir. When she opened her eyes she found Lucas looking at her with the most warm, caring and innocent expression she had ever seen. It was an expression not unlike the one Nathan wore on his face when he came to her room the night that he overdosed. Haley looked up at him through lidded eyes not sure of what he was going to say. Leaning over her like a guardian angel he just said the simplest thing " I'm glad you're back Hales". He then proceeded to pull her into himself as tears welled in her eyes and threatened to overflow. Haley sank into the comfort that Lucas offered knowing that this was a sign of forgiveness and though she did not feel worthy she accepted.

Over the next couple of weeks Haley & Lucas seemed to get their relationship back on track but it was not without a few speed bumps. Namely Nathan it was like he was always in the room the topic of him loomed but was never discussed.The same could be said of Lucas whenever Nathan and Haley had their late night conversations. Haley knew that sooner or later that she would have to see Nathan so during one of her nightly chats with him she casually brought up getting together just to test the water.
Friday evening after work as Haley rounded the corner of her office building she saw a black Range Rover. She also saw a handsome dark haired young man leaning against it it took a while for Haley to register that it was Nathan. Haley walked cautiously toward her husband unsure of how to react. She hadn't actually asked him to come but she could not avoid him either. Once she got within a few feet of him Haley just opted to smile and say "Hey there mister". Nathan greeted her with an "Hey Hales" as He gathered her into his arms. This some what caught Haley off guard and she stiffened but she quickly recovered and began to relax. "If he wasn't going be affected by this she thought then neither was she.
After some awkward attempts at a conversation Nathan offered his wife a ride home. The ride to the apartment was surprisingly easy going and Haley felt grateful that they kept in touch. Although things were weird earlier once they got in the car the barrier had faltered a bit which she knew wouldn't have happened if they hadn't kept as much contact as they did. Nathan teased her a bit about looking older in her work clothes which consisted of black knee length skirt , a black & white ribbon belt that Haley had tied into a bow at the waist and a tucked in white blouse the look was completed by black & white hot kiss pumps. Haley was about to Zing him right back when Nathan cut her off by placing a hand on her knee and telling her that he thought she also looked beautiful. Haley's knee burned under Nathan's hand and she became nervous Nathan became aware of it and removed his hand. By the time they pulled up outside her complex the crash course in polite conversation was through.
Nathan turned off the car and turned to Haley he was silent for a few moments it seemed to Haley that he was searching for the right words." It's killing me Haley"
he said honestly" It's killing me to be here with you but not "with" you you know?
Haley nodded shortly and waited for him to continue " Do you know why I showed up?" he asked Haley shook her head motioning no " because I knew that you wouldn't". This was when Haley chose to speak again she began to explain how much she wanted to see him but how it became easier not to. After the rush of words finished tumbling out of her mouth she sat quietly for a while before softly grazing her hand against Nathan's cheek. Unexpectedly Nathan leaned in closer to her,soon he was so close that Haley could feel his breath on her face.
Haley came to the realization that it was she who unconsciously intiated his reaction. She wanted to be close to him it was unnatural for her not to be
Nathan held her face and moved in effectively tangling his hands in her hair as he touched his lips to hers. The kiss was soft and soothing at first but it grew more intense by the second. As things got more passionate Nathan tightened his grip on Haley moving his hands down her back and moving his attention to her neck this made Haley involuntarily close her eyes and when she opened them the face she saw wasn't Nathan's.............

After the evening of the car incident with Nathan it would seem to the outside world that Haley was avoiding Lucas like the plague. This was because she was and Haley hated herself for it she knew that although it wasn't his fault that he felt responsible for her avoidance. She heard it in his tone every time she turned down an invitation to get together.
Haley knew that whatever "this" was That it would play itself out one way or another and she wasn't about to lose a her best friend over something so trivial.
So after about two weeks of hiding Haley went to his mother's cafe. When She got to the door of Karen's she contemplated leaving but knew it was too late when she saw him. The bell over the doorway chimed as Haley stepped inside Lucas was sitting at the counter facing away from the door his usually spiky blonde head newly shorn and buried in a book. He barely acknowledged the sound of the bell so Haley decided to creep up behind him.
She tentatively placed her hands over Lucas's eyes this made him jump slightly in response. "I knew you couldn't stay away he said as Haley rolled her eyes in mock annoyance. Lucas said her name and she released him he then swung around to face her amusement plainly evident on his face. This relieved Haley but it was short lived because this rapidly gave way to concern as their laughter died down. Lucas rested his book down behind the counter slid off his stool and took Haley by the hand. Without a word He lead Haley out of the cafe and on to the sidewalk in front of it.
The two of them then began walking in slow careful strides to no where in particular. They walked in silence for a minute before Lucas turned to her" It's Nathan isn't it? Haley barely had time to process his words before he continued
" Don't say that it isn't because I can feel it". Had it been a couple of weeks ago he would've been right but tonight he was clueless and for that Haley was grateful.
Haley decided to follow his lead and began to tell him about seeing Nathan again.
Though she did not go into the details of the meeting she did tell Lucas about keeping in touch. If nothing else it was a chance to clear the air Haley didn't like keeping important things from him. Maybe this way it wouldn't be such a taboo subject she thought. After talking to Lucas she found out it was Nathan who severed ties to him and she was shocked. If that was a shock to her system then finding out that it was because Lucas betrayed Dan completely took her by surprise.
This is because Haley used to talk to Nathan about Lucas when they first began to acknowledge each other as brothers and found out that Nathan had always wanted Lucas in his life. The fact that he Let their father come between them for as long as he did he regretted above all else. So Haley couldn't comprehend how he let Dan do it again.
Without intending to they reached a destination it was Lucas' house. Haley followed him to the little red door on the side of the porch it was a door she'd entered countless times before to get to his room. She walked in and found that it had been changed she figured it would be since his ex-girlfriend Brooke had taken refuge there for the last couple months of the school year. She smiled to herself thinking about the previous night she then disentangled herself and turned around to face him. He looked so peaceful lying there that she almost felt jealous she began moving as close as she could without touching him. There was no warning when his eyes flew open he did this in a manner that made Haley believe that he'd been awake a while.
Then as quick as lightning Haley saw that it was just in her mind as he sat up and began to yawn and stretch before falling back into the pillows. He turned on his side facing her and groggily smiled " Morning Hales" to which she replied " right back at cha". Haley nervously began to gather the covers around herself as he stared at her making her keenly aware of her state of undress. Lucas caught hold of her hand stopping the motion and pulling her close. He planted butterfly kisses from the top of her forehead to her nose and finally her lips and as she parted them it deepened. He kissed her with a desperation that made apparent that he knew it would be their last.
Soon his hands were wrapped in her thick and auburn hair and she felt herself falling to the point of no return. Haley knew it had to stop there or she wouldn't be able to leave him. Nathan finding out Tree hill the whole scenario flashed before her eyes making her jump back into reality. Nathan would never forgive him and she worked too hard to destroy the relationship that she helped build between them.
Haley pulled back placing a hand against Lucas's chest looking into the look of loss in his eyes for understanding. She saw reluctance for a fleeting moment before she saw what she was looking for. A little part of her hurt though she pulled herself together quick enough that she was confident that he didn't notice. Haley then continued to gather the fabric and step out of bed only to be met with resistance. She turned to look and saw Lucas smiling back at her and with a quick tug Haley was exposed. Normally she would have been embarrassed standing there in just her underwear but right now she was a little more than annoyed.
She stood at the foot of the bed with her hands on her hips "Oh that's real mature Luke". Lucas sat back chuckling which didn't make her feel any better until she thought about how ridiculous she must've looked and reluctantly she started laughing herself. It was then that Haley realized why he did it he didn't want awkwardness between them just as much as she didn't so he just diffused the situation. After the laughter died down Haley turned on her heel to get his his basketball jersey which was hanging on his door. She was stopped dead in her tracks when he said quickly" No don't can I at least have the memory?"
Haley was speechless all she could manage was a whispered "ok" she blushed from the top of head to the soles of her feet. She rapidly became hyper aware of everything around her the window behind her, the tousled waves of her bed head tickling her neck. The room bathed in the soft red glow of the morning sun filtering through the blinds and Lucas' sparkling blue eyes as he took mental snapshots of her. Although it was just seconds it felt like a lifetime to Haley and she couldn't bare it anymore so she grabbed the jersey and ran to his bathroom.
When she emerged moments later dressed in her clothes from the night before she found he had left his room. She could hear talking down the hall so she made her way to the kitchen. She found him at the table with a hot cup of coffee in his hands chatting with Peyton.......

Although it was just seconds it felt like a lifetime to Haley and she couldn't bare it anymore so she grabbed the jersey and ran to his bathroom.
When she emerged moments later dressed in her clothes from the night before she found he had left his room. She could hear talking down the hall so she made her way to the kitchen. She found him at the table with a hot cup of coffee in his hands chatting with Peyton.......

After the morning in the kitchen Haley was welcomed into a new version of her former life. The we weeks seemed to fly by but not without bringing forth a few key changes. The first being the amount of time that she spent with Peyton she really helped ease what she called the"boy drama" in Haley's life. Although she knew nothing of what went on between Haley & Lucas she jokingly stated " spending all that time bouncing between those two couldn't be healthy." Peyton became a lifesaver after Haley decided to go back to school by offering her a place to stay. Haley knew that she couldn't maintain her life the way it was going cutting back on hours and attending school so she gave up the apartment.
Haley's Last night at the apartment was spent packing. She was dressed accordingly wearing an old pair of thigh high khaki cargo shorts and one of Taylor's old metallica tiny tees her new blonde streaked hair in two braids. The stereo played the song different by a new group called Acceptance she hummed as she finished up. Nathan and Lucas offered to help but she declined their offer because there was something refreshing about packing up the past. Haley was startled when she heard the knock at the door and her heart leapt to her throat in anticipation of who it might be.
She answered the door to find Nathan's stormy blue eyes staring back at her.
Haley followed her instincts inviting him in and wrapping her arms around his neck. After the initial resistance Nathan wrapped his arms around her, she could hear his heart pounding rapidly in her ear. Haley Leaned back when he started to speak "Haley when I said those vows I meant them" he said somberly . "nothing can keep me away from you we're meant to be together and against all odds we were and that means something." Lucas's image briefly flashed in Haley's mind as the memories that she shared with Nathan washed over her. Nathan tilted her chin to face him as he said "I just want to know that I'm not in this marriage alone". "And you're not" was said as she kissed his lips softly.
Soon Haley found herself settling in at Peyton's with the first day of school rapidly approaching. It was a place that she wasn't quite sure that she was ready to go back to. Haley had felt that she some how had outgrown it and in a way she had but she still missed it. Before she knew it was Half way through the 1st day and Haley was standing in the quad still a bundle of nerves. She fidgeted with her the sun earrings dangling from her ears, the soft wave of curls that Peyton put in her hair and the beaded necklace that had given her as a gift.
She was just about to head to the tutoring lounge when Nathan appeared. He greeted her giving an approving once over of her outfit. It consisted of cropped jeans, a long beige spaghetti strapped shirt accented with braided brown belt that hung low on her waist. Nathan seemed to pick up on Haley's anxiety and comfortingly wrapped an arm around her as he escorted her to the lounge.
Just as they stopped in front of the door Lucas breezed by grazing Haley's arm and tossing a head nod in Nathan's direction. She stared after to him knowing that things were ok, but lost in thought she almost missed the faint smile that played on Nathan's lips after Lucas' gesture. "It's small but it's a start" Haley thought to herself. She then focused back on Nathan who was saying goodbye before he headed off to basketball practice. He rested his arms on each of her shoulders before leaning down to give her a kiss that flooded her with a sense of relief, promise and more importantly hope.
In the end Haley loved Lucas but she'd made her choice and she was happy with it, but what put Haley at ease with her life again was that he was a part of it.
This is because he is a part of her so it doesn't matter what the type of relationship they have what's most important to Haley is that they have one.
